Boating Wins Six Boating Writer’s International Awards
At the annual Boating Writer’s International Awards, Boating took away six awards, most notably completely sweeping the ”Boating Video” category.
In the Boating Videos category, Boating earned First, Second and Third places, plus a Merit Award. For the Boat Tests category, Boating garnered Second Place. In the print-web category of Seamanship Rescue and Safety, boating scored a Third Place prize.
“I am proud and fortunate to work with these award-winning pros,” said Boating Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Falvey. “My respect to them, and my great thanks and kudos to the support staff – those behind the faces and bylines, the videographers, editors, producers, and art directors – who helped these winners achieve greatness and helped further Boating’s leadership position at the forefront of marine enthusiast media.”
Randy Vance, BoatingLAB Director, prolific video producer and presenter for Boating commented on his win:
“Video is the fastest, perhaps the only, growing form of media in the world, today. Participating in it is a rewarding challenge in team work. While writers are solely responsible for crafting their story, video writer/hosts’ projects succeed only with the team work of screen editors and videographers who share the vision of the presenter’s story. Editors and videographers can, and usually do, have equal impact on the story created for the audience.”
This award is the result of contributions by Bonnier Production Manager and videographer Shalley Chapman, staff editor Kenneth Johnson and lead videographer, freelancer Luke Yong Falvey, who’s also Editorial Director of Bonnier’s Boating and Watersports titles, cited the sweep of the video category as significant. “We’ve worked hard to evolve as a media brand. Boating’s team creates compelling and engaging content on all platforms including print, web, social media and video. These wins validate that evolution.”
Interestingly, while Boating produces some 200 videos per year covering a range of topics from boat reviews to how-to, two of the award-winning videos concerned boating safety, and in fact, were produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Sport Fishing Television Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Season on Discovery
Winter Park, FL (March 12, 2021) — Sport Fishing Television, the Telly Award-winning fishing-travel-adventure series, celebrates its 20th season April 3 on Discovery, kicking off an 11-episode trek that takes viewers to Alaska, Louisiana, Panama, the Florida Keys, Cape Cod, San Diego, North Carolina and Florida’s Indian River Lagoon.
Using the show’s two-decade milestone as inspiration, the season’s theme is evolution. (“The history and future of fishing — told one destination at a time,” to use the show’s tagline.) Combining award-winning cinematography and rare archival footage, the 2021 season showcases heart-pounding fishing action, and explores how the species, destinations, migrations, and tactics have evolved over the years.
SFTV was created in 2001 by executive producer Drew Townes, who still oversees the show today. The original concept was to have the editors of Salt Water Sportsman, Sport Fishing and Marlin serve as hosts. Now 20 years later, the show endures, with several of the flagship sponsors still involved (including Yellowfin Yachts and Mercury).
When asked about the 2021 season, Townes says, “I can tell you we were in the right place at the right time. It’s the most incredible fishing footage we’ve ever captured, and the stories will keep you entranced in our favorite pastime.”
SFTV: Evolution premieres April 3 at 6:30am on Discovery, with new episodes every Saturday.

Hawg Tank to Feature Fishing Demos at Kansas Open Season Sportsman’s Expo
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (March 9, 2021) — Fishing demos will take center stage at the Hawg Tank as part of the Kansas Open Season Sportsman’s Expo in Overland Park, Kan., March 12-14 at the Overland Park Convention Center.
The Hawg Tank is a mobile 5,000 gallon tank, built on a trailer frame, filled with water and stocked with fish to conduct demonstrations of fishing techniques. With the use of a sound system, guest fishing experts will both educate and entertain show attendees all weekend. The Hawg Tank travels the country to boat shows, sportsman shows, fairs and festivals.
“It’s good to have a show since we have not worked for a year now,” said Jim Vitaro, owner/operator of the Hawg Tank. “It means that things are starting to move in the right direction, and things are starting to open back up. It’s great that this show is setting the pace to move forward in such a positive direction. Plus we get to do what we love to do the best, talk about fishing and the great outdoors.”
At the Kansas Expo, home state fishermen, Travis Perret, Brent Chapman and Thomas Wells will all be holding demos/seminars at the Hawg Tank.
“The tank gives people a chance to see how different baits work under water, while at the same time you can see fish react to the different baits and techniques,” shared Vitaro. “Plus you’re able to talk to the pros before and after their seminars, and ask them questions.”
Perret, who hails from Overland Park, has won several fishing tournaments using the Ned Rig and other finesse style techniques. He is part of the Z-Man Fishing pro staff and Denali Rods pro staff and will teach Expo attendees how to get more fish in the boat with finesse techniques.
Chapman fishes at the highest level of bass fishing in the world including the Bass Pro Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series and Major League Fishing. He won the 2012 Elite Series Angler of the Year, which most anglers consider the toughest and most prestigious title that a professional angler can attain. Chapman has qualified for 14 Bassmaster Classics and has won 4 Bassmaster tournaments. Chapman calls Lake Quivira, Kansas home.
Wells is a lifelong Kansas City resident and specializes in fishing the Kansas City and Ozark area lakes and waterways. Founder of the Kansas City Team Tour, a local tournament series that has some of the highest payouts and toughest local competition, Wells has extensive experience fishing for bass, crappie, wipers and walleye.
