Orlando, Fla. — Bonnier Corp.’s Boating earned the coveted title of Brand of the Year at the company’s second annual Bonnier Excellence Awards. Fourteen employees and teams received honors at the Gala Awards Ceremony, held at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 24. The awards program recognizes outstanding achievement in content, design, digital, program development, customer service, sales, marketing and overall excellence.


“I want to thank all Bonnier Corp. employees for their hard work this year, and congratulate all the winners of the 2015 Bonnier Excellence Awards,” said CEO Dave Freygang. “We appreciate everyone’s commitment and creativity to their brands, and I could not be more proud to work with everyone here at Bonnier.”


Boating, led by Publisher John McEver and Editor-in-Chief Kevin Falvey, finished 2014 up 20 percent over its contribution target for the year — 60 percent higher than its contribution in 2013. On the digital audience side, the brand has experienced a 53 percent year-over-year increase in monthly unique visitors and a 47 percent gain in page views.


Falvey was also recognized as Editor of the Year. He is credited with generating creative solutions that combine reader, client and channel needs, which helped grow Boating’s revenue and audience.


Todd Detwiler, Design Director of Popular Science, was named Designer of the Year. Detwiler spearheaded the 2014 redesign of Popular Science, which included a fresh logo, new paper stock and a complete overhaul of the magazine’s presentation. He was also an advisor on the redesign of the new popsci.com.


In the sales categories, Outdoor Group Sales Manager Katie Logan was named Multichannel Sales Representative of the Year. Glenn Sandridge, Group Publisher of the Boating, Water Sports and Aviation Group, won Sales Manager of the Year. Also for the Boating, Water Sports and Aviation Group, Northeast Sales Manager Matt White was awarded Sales Representative of the Year.


In the two new digital categories at this year’s awards, Popular Science’s Port to Sandcastle won for Digital Initiative of the Year, while Social Media Manager Amanda Jackson was named Digital Innovator of the Year.


Other category winners include the Active Interest Network’s Group Marketing Director Haley Bischof for Marketer of the Year and Saveur’s Culinary Travel Awards for Program of the Year. Group Production Director Rina Murray was awarded Customer Service Representative of the Year for her work with the Bonnier Motorcycle Group.


Freygang also presented two special awards. The CEO Choice Award, for the unsung heroes of the company, went to Vice President, Digital Operations David Butler and Senior Director of Operations Jim Patterson. The President’s MVP Award was given to the Active Interest Network’s Vice President of Brand Strategies Matt Hickman.
