Nancy Brooke Smith Named Creative Director of The Parenting Group

New York, NY – Bonnier Corp.'s Parenting Group announced today that Nancy Brooke Smith has been named creative director of The Parenting Group, where she will oversee art direction for Parenting, Babytalk and Parenting.com. Smith was formerly art director of Babytalk magazine, a role she has served since joining The Parenting Group in 2004. The Group also announced that Elizabeth Shaw, who returned to Babytalk last year as executive editor, has been appointed deputy editor at Parenting; and Dawn Roode, most recently Babytalk's managing editor and a former managing editor of Child, Latina and Harper's Bazaar, will assume the role of managing editor for Parenting.

Prior to The Parenting Group, Nancy Brooke Smith held positions as senior deputy art director at Self, deputy art director at Talk and House & Garden, and art director at Ms. Magazine. She started her career at The Washington Post, where she was responsible for the production of the weekly "Food" and "Outlook" sections, in addition to layout design for The Washington Post Magazine.

Her fresh approach to visual design has received numerous awards – most recently, her cover illustrating Babytalk's August 2006 issue on breastfeeding garnered a 2007 ASME "Best Cover" nomination in the personal service category.

"Anyone who picks up a copy of Babytalk knows just how amazingly talented Nancy is, and I'm thrilled that she's going to be bringing her creative vision to Parenting in her new role," said Susan Kane, editorial director of The Parenting Group and editor-in-chief of Parenting magazine.

Elizabeth Shaw was previously deputy health director at Self magazine, where she was responsible for the magazine's special annual health sections, including the National Magazine Award-winning "Breast Cancer Handbook." Prior to joining Self in 2000, Shaw had been a senior editor at Babytalk, covering infant and women's health. She began her career writing and editing several columns for American Health, and holds a Master's degree from New York University.

Dawn Roode began her career in production (as director at Vogue, Folio, and Mobile Computing), and transitioned to the managing editor role while at Bazaar under editor-in-chief Kate Betts in 2000. She holds a Masters in Publishing from Pace University and a liberal arts degree from Fairfield University.

Lisa Bain, a 11-year-veteran of Parenting magazine, will continue to serve as the publication's executive editor.

"I couldn't ask for better partners to take Parenting to the next level," added Kane. "Lisa, Elizabeth and Dawn are three gifted editors who bring so much talent and expertise to their respective roles – they're going to make an incredible team."
