Yachting to Launch Image Recognition in September Issue


New York, N.Y. – Bonnier's Yachting is introducing image recognition in its upcoming September issue. The service, called Pongr, is intended to increase contact between Yachting and its readers by providing instant interaction through readers' mobile devices.

Simply put, image recognition works when readers use their camera-equipped, Web-enabled smartphone to take a picture of an editorial page or ad in the magazine, then send that image to a designated server via an app, text message or e-mail. The server, operated by Pongr, then sends back content, links or information to the reader's mobile device.

When image recognition is used to activate an editorial page or advertisement, it results in more interconnected print and digital, and a new way to capture data on engaged readers and leads for advertisers.

From an editorial perspective, Pongr preserves the integrity of the page design, rather than incorporating a distracting barcode or Jagtag. The service also gives the magazine instantaneous interaction with the reader, making more out of an already good relationship and simplifying the back-and-forth in an unobtrusive and satisfying way. Because it depends on the mobile device as an interface, additional Pongr content is smartphone-friendly. The service gathers reader data from that mobile device, and its image-driven nature stimulates sharing via Facebook and Twitter.

The Yachting sales team sees this as a powerful tool, breaking down barriers between advertisers and leads.
