January 16, 2013
New York, N.Y. — New Bonnier Corp. CEO Dave Freygang has promoted David Ritchie to Chief Content Officer, a newly created position for the company. He will be responsible for how Bonnier's content teams create, package, execute and optimize content to reinforce its brands and build audience across all channels of distribution. Ritchie had been Director of Editorial Operations for the company's Active Interest division for the past year.
"For us to achieve audience growth in this media landscape, it's essential to have a strong editorial voice to oversee content," said Freygang. "David has the talent and leadership skills to provide the guidance, support, structure, personnel and processes our brands need to consistently meet our business objectives."
Under this new structure, all editorial, digital, television, audience development and web development teams will report to Ritchie.
"When Dave approached me with this role, I was naturally thrilled to have the opportunity to help chart the course for this great company," said Ritchie. "We have some of the best at Bonnier — award winners, experts in their field, industry leaders, hard workers and proven performers all around. My goal is to help build an environment and culture where we can reach a higher plateau of success."
During his leadership of the Active Interest division, Ritchie implemented consistent editorial processes and metrics throughout its groups' brands, including enhanced measures for editorial planning and budgeting, and improved coordination with audience development, sparking big advances in the digital properties.
His tenure with the company began with Marlin in 1988 after his graduation from Troy State University. He served as editor from 1992 to 2002, leading a successful redesign and taking on the editorship of a second magazine, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, along with various book publishing projects. In 2002, he became marketing director for Hatteras Yachts before returning to Bonnier in 2008 as editorial director for the marine titles.
